Operation name Monitoring of dolphins in Slovenian sea for the reporting period 2013-2018
Operation summary

It is intended to collect data on the size of the bottlenose dolphin population (Tursiops sp.) in the Adriatic Sea, which represent a population that also appears in the Slovenian sea (a sea under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Slovenia). It is intended to collect data on the movement of population trends of this population based on past censuses and assessment of the conservation status of these species.  In addition, it is intended to obtain data on the number and proportion of dolphins that regularly occur in the Slovenian sea.

Information needs to be obtained for nature conservation purposes in Slovenia. Monitoring of the entire Adriatic Sea was carried out in 2010 and 2013, in the summertime. The conservation status (requirement of the Habitats Directive) of bottlenose dolphins (the only dolphin species on the reference list of the Habitats Directive for Slovenia) could not be assessed in the report on the implementation of the Habitats Directive for the period 2007-2012 due to the insufficient data series. This monitoring will provide sufficient data to assess the conservation status.
